Having published Rule of Three for over five years now, we feel it’s high time that we participate in the spinoff sweepstakes. Rule of Three’s Readership Demographic Analysis (“RDA”) department reports that, although our market penetration is very strong in the Baby Boomer segment, we are severely underserved when it comes to reaching Millennials.

Therefore, we set out to develop a product directly targeted at this critical market segment. Acknowledging that Millennials don’t consume printed content at the level Baby Boomers do, we determined that, perhaps a podcast would be a more appropriate vehicle to reach them. Which raised the legitimate concern that a podcast hosted by a Baby Boomer might be a limiting factor. The compromise solution was to locate a Millennial who could step in to perform co-hosting duties.

Given Rule of Three’s financial constraints (we’re cheap) and the organization’s firm commitment to nepotism, we secured the services of my daughter, Emily Drees, to join the team as co-host. The final step in creating this new product offering was to brand it properly.

As a reminder, the founding principles of Rule of Three include:

1. Secure a Beverage

2. Don’t be a Douchebag

3. Amuse Yourself

These principles offered us distinct options for consideration. It was pretty easy to dispense with Rule No. 2, because we intend for the podcast to be a family-friendly offering. Rule No. 3 could be a solid choice, because that is an overarching goal of the entire Rule of Three organization. In the end, we settled on Rule No. 1: Secure a Beverage as the brand name to be attached to the podcast. . .
