Here is my working definition for sweat pants - for men, elasticized waist and pant leg, for women, elasticized pant leg alone (they can get by with an elastic waist). However, harem pants, which are defined in part by an elasticized pant leg, pose a dilemma. Will address it in a note.

While I appreciate you pictorial journery, I think that the clothing standard for women in the workplace was more much onerous and expensive compared to a man who could just rotate a couple of ties around to create a new "look" everyday. Sweatpants might be pushing it for either gender, but then we need to define sweatpants since there are a spectrum of wardrobe choices here.

I agree that wardrobe decisions have always been more difficult for women. As for defining sweatpants, allow me to offer a concurring opinion with Justice Potter Stewart, who noted, regarding pornography, “I know it when I see it.”
